Create the fundamental design of the knowledge skill.

Is it? I personally favour the option as posted by midgard DM. Bent Havelaars for example has specialized himself greatly in several subjects and is therefore lacking knowledge other area's.

Not page bound?

1 page can contain facts that are both very common and not very common. Should we not be able to define the skill required by paragraph?

I've thought about that and

I've thought about that and most of the times there is a part of that knowledge that is under one level (common) and more information is available under another level. What I wanted to do was separate those two pieces into two pages, one with the common knowledge and another one with the more obscure knowledge. I've done something like that with this? and this page. I consider this a better way because it separates the knowledge levels better, allowing you to read a single page without having to worry about reading stuff you do not want to read.

sub-skills?

Where we still going to create sub-skills? As in, not only give every lore post a level prerequisite but also a category and than give players the option to divide their knowledge points across the categories (giving each player these knowledge points: knowledge points=categories*points in knowledge skill)

Example:

Character 1: (Lazy player that does enter his skills but leaves the sub-skills on default) Knowledge 3

  • arcane 3
  • divine 3
  • flora/fauna 3
  • utgard 3
  • asgard 3
  • midgard 3

character 2: (Midgardian flora Specialized lorekeeper) Knowledge 7:

  • arcane 6
  • divine 6
  • flora/fauna 10
  • utgard 5
  • asgard 5
  • midgard 10

We could even give certain knowledge prerequisites from several knowledge skills (the forming of the lorekeepers would for example require both knowledge about religion and the history of midgard.)

If we later think of a new category we could simply give the old players default stats for that or give them the option to re-organize their stats (but not lower their old stats).

The above categories are simply examples.

That sounds like a good idea.

That sounds like a good idea. The categories are already there, just not yet displayed. We may need to expand them a bit but I think just using the general "Category" item for this is suitable.

That might be suitable, but

That might be suitable, but the general system would need some tweaking then I think, and we than need to define very strictly what belongs to what (no wait, we needed to do that anyway. ;))

The Idea

The basic idea is this: Every piece of knowledge that can also be acquired in-game, for example the Lore pages and the in-character Stories, has a level associated with it. This level is the minimum amount of points in the "Knowledge" attribute required to know it in-character. So if your character has a Knowledge of 6 and you are reading a Lore article of Knowledge Level 3, then you can use this information in-character as well. However, should you click on a link that takes you to a level 12 Lore article, you would not be able to use that information in-character, as your character has not enough knowledge to know this piece of lore. Better continue reading those books!

Possible expertise levels

It is completely understandable that a linguistic expert knows next to nothing about magic, wheras his knowledge about diffrent languages and dialects is unparralelled. Is it not possible to introduce a "Specialty" skill, that gives you a knowledge bonus for specific groups. I believe it to be a somewhat more ellegant system than assigning each and every diffrent cathegory a diffrent vallue.

I personally favour the

I personally favour the option Brian presented. Bent havelaars for example has greatly specialized himself in certain subjects; while negelecting other.
